How to pick the best waterproof baby carrier cover for travel and the best babywearing coat and jacket best buys.
I am one of those people who is always cold so when my sons first winter approached, I was a little apprehensive.
I knew I could get a stroller footmuff and a car seat bunting to keep him warm but how would I keep him and myself warm while baby wearing?
All solutions seemed to have downsides:
Wearing the carrier under the coat meant I wasn’t able to close the zip up my jacket, making both my son and I cold.
Wearing the carrier over the coat meant he would have his face against the coast exterior, not necessarily clean or soft and how was I supposed to take it off in the mall, what would I do with my baby?
All these questions made me do a lot of research on solutions for baby wearing in winter and in the end, I would a couple that worked well: baby carrier winter covers and baby carrier jackets!
If you already know about them and are looking for suggestions on which to buy, this is my table with the top baby carrier and top baby carrying jackets.
If you are not sure what either of these things are, keep reading!

Best baby carrier winter covers and baby carrier coats
These are universal baby carrier rain covers and winter covers, built in such a way to suit most carriers.
Best Baby Carrier winter covers
Baby carrier winter covers are baby carrier accessories you use in the winter when you need extra protection for baby from the cold and the rain.
They exist brand specific or universal, and they are an extra layer of protection you usually secure with snap buttons on top of your front carrier, so you can keep baby warm even if you cannot zip up your coat around them.
They are a handy piece of baby gear for travel and super useful at home too if, like me, you live in a place with long and rainy winters.
Out of several on the market, these are the best baby carrier winter covers for travel and everyday you can buy on Amazon.
JAN & JUL Waterproof Carrier Cover with Hood and Pockets
If, like me, you live in a very wet climate, you need a cover that can take the rain so you may like this waterproof baby carrier cover by Jan & Jul.
The cover comes in 3 different colors and it is made of DWR coated fabric that is both fluorine and PVC free and has a Fabric Waterproof Rating of 10000 mm.
Using the winter cover is super easy: after you have worn the carrier and put the baby in, you attach the cover with snap buttons (easy, not fiddly) and then you have straps with buckles to have the carrier in place.
A hood protects your baby’s head when needed and there is a large pocket at the front for your hands which is a lovely extra touch!
This winter baby carrier cover has a universal fit so you can use it in front carriers but also car seats and strollers (although for those I prefer bunting, but that is a personal consideration only).
RoSK-Down Pouch 3way: best waterproof baby carrier cover for very cold winters
This baby carrier cover by ‘Rain or Shine Kids’ is another clever and versatile solution to keep baby warm in winter while in the carrier but also in the stroller and car seat.
The cover has an elasticated base that gives it a universal fit and basically makes it work like a soft and warm sleeping bag.
The RoSK cover has a water and stain repellent polyester shell made of polyester and duck down and feather filling plus a soft polyester lining that makes it warm and pleasant to the touch.
Like the one above, it has a nice pocket at the front for your hands that is perfect if you don’t want to have bulky gloves.

Woobee Pouch: best waterproof baby carrier cover for mild winters and spring
This WooBee Pouch winter carrier cover is again by Rain or Shine Kids but it is different from the one mentioned above both in look, price and specs.
Rather than a dawn+feather, this carrier cover keeps baby warm with an outside of water and stain repellent nylon 100% fabric and a soft and fluffy plush polyester fabric inside.
Outside, it not-quilted outer look and a large flap that you can give the carrier cover a warm and plush look.
The other difference from the other one by the same brand in this list is the temperature rating: this one is best for mild winters or the beginning of the chilly season rather than freezing conditions. Item weights: 12.8 ounces.
Best babywearing coast for winter
If you are looking at getting a new coat, then you may like these baby wearing coats, which look like a normal jacket/coat but have an extra pouch on the front or an expandable panel that allows you to wrap them around your carrier.
Babywearing coats and jackets are intended to use with a carrier (they do not replace it) and may sound an extravagant expense, an item you won’t use for long but they don’t have to be.
Depending of what you buy, you don’t need to break the bank and some models are easy to wear even during you pregnancy and the toddler years – a decent run for a coat!
Things to look for when choosing a baby wearing coat or baby wearing jacket are:
How warm do you need to be – like any other coat, you need to buy for the weather you are in and this is true for warmth but also for water resistance
How are you going to carry your baby – baby wearing coats work with front carriers so if you want the flexibility to carry baby on the back or hip, this may not be a great solution
Do you also want to use it as a normal coat or will it be an extra item?
Depending on your needs, you may like one of the following.

Zip Us In Jacket Expander Panel
This is not a baby wearing coat but rather, an extra panel you can insert into your own zipper jacket to turn it into a maternity jacket or baby wearing jacket.
The panel works simply with two side zippers (several types avaiable) that attach to your own zipper and effectively gives you that extra material that you need to zip up later in pregnancy of when using a baby carrier.
Cool feature: since it only needs zippers, dad can wear it too!
