Family Packing List for London: what to pack for London in each season

Tried and tested, realistic family packing list for London. If you are packing for London with kids, this family-friendly London packing list covers what to wear, shoes and travel essentials for every season

Packing for London with kids is mostly about being comfortable, prepared for changeable weather, and ready for lots of walking.

London is very family-friendly, but distances are big and the weather can be unpredictable, so a little planning goes a long way.

This packing list is designed for families, with practical suggestions that work whether you’re visiting with toddlers, school-age kids, or teens.

Documents & Travel Essentials

Before anything else, make sure these are safely packed (and double-checked for every family member):

  • Passports (check expiry dates for children too), Visas and any other travel document that may be relevant to you (if not sure, check the UK Government website for acccurare info
  • Copies of important documents (paper + digital)
  • Travel insurance details
  • Credit / debit cards
  • Some British pounds in cash
  • Booking confirmations (accommodation, tours, transport)
  • Consent letter if travelling with one parent only – this is important! If traveling alone with your child or someone else’s child (for instance: if you are a grandparent with a grandchild or similar) check well in advance documents that may be needed to enter the country.

Tip: Keep documents together, for instance in an easy to store folder and delegate one adults to be in charge of it, so you don’t get into the ‘I though you had them’, ‘No, I thought YOU had them’ scenario.

Seasonal tips:

  • Spring & autumn: bring layers, a light jumper and mid season jacket
  • Summer: pack breathable clothes, but still include a light layer for cooler days and air-conditioned indoor spaces.
  • Winter: warm layers are essential, including thermal tops for kids who feel the cold more easily.
  • In all seasons, consider that you never really know what the weather will do so the more versatile your clothing, the better!

Outerwear (Very Important in London!)

  • Lightweight waterproof jacket or raincoat (for everyone)
  • Compact umbrella (optional but useful)
