How to Make Your Home Smell Christmassy (Naturally + Effortlessly)
How to Make Your Home Smell Christmassy: easy, realistic and family friendly ways to make your house smell festive this holiday season.
Christmas is about all senses: the twinkle of lights, the jingle of bells, the warmth of the fire, the melt-in-your-mouth sweetness of Christmas bakes, and the unmistakable, cozy smell of Christmas itself!
There’s something wonderfully grounding about walking into a home that smells like Christmas. Before guests even notice your tree or table setting, the fragrance of your house sets the mood — warm, festive, and instantly welcoming.
The good news is that creating that festive home scent is incredibly easy, and you can do it with simple, natural ingredients you probably already have at home.
These are my favourite, family-friendly ways to make your house smell Christmassy, without overpowering scents or synthetic sprays.
Before You Begin: Start with a Clean Canvas
Fragrance can elevate a space beautifully, but mixing scents on top of lingering kitchen smells won’t deliver the cosy Christmas vibe you’re after.
Before adding any Christmas home fragrance, do a quick reset:
- Open windows – as much as possible, get fresh air in even if it is cold outside. It will do wonders to get rid of unwanted smell
- Empty bins
- Check cupboards, fruit bowls and fridge for food going bad: this will make your house safer and also remove any lingering smells. It’s incredible how even just one rotting piece of fruit can fill the kitchen with the most disturbing smell
- Wipe surfaces and make sure drains are clean, so there is no sitting water anywhere
A neutral base makes any seasonal scent feel intentional and refreshing, not overwhelming.
Classic Christmas Scents
Now what your house is rid of bad smells, you can start adding the ones you want!
Many smells naturally evoke Christmas: warm, spicy, woody, citrusy. Great Christmas fragrance ideas include:
- Cinnamon
- Cloves
- Star anise
- Gingerbread spices
- Spiced apple
- Roasted chestnuts
- Mulled wine
- Fir / pine
- Orange or winter citrus
- Vanilla
As you can see, many do not need much effort to find and are safe also around kids and pets.
Natural Ways to Make Your Home Smell Like Christmas
These easy ideas will help you create a festive-smelling home in minutes.
Bake Christmas Cookies
Nothing beats the smell of homemade biscuits — especially buttery Christmas cookies. The fragrance is warm and subtle, perfect even for guests who dislike synthetic smells. They are super easy to make and I have a recipe for you, should you want to give it a go! Find my Christmas cookies recipe here.
Simmer a Pot of Spices
One of the simplest ways to make your house smell festive naturally is simmering spices on the stove. Fill a small pot with water and add a mix such as:
- Cinnamon sticks
- Citrus peel
- Star anise
- Cardamom
- Cloves
- Pine sprigs
- Vanilla
Let it bubble gently and top up water as needed.
Make Mulled Wine or Mulled Cider
If you want to get a great Christmas smell and also make a lovely alcoholic treat in the process, then you can make mulled wine! A taste and perfume guaranteed to bring a touch of German style Christmas to your home and a lovely thing to offer guests too. A warming pot of wine, spices and citrus fills the house with the ultimate Christmas smell — and gives you a delicious drink too. You can find a nice mulled wine recipe here.
Create Pomander Balls (Oranges + Cloves)
A classic, all-natural Christmas craft that releases a sweet, spicy fragrance for days, pomander balls are wonderfully simple to make and add an instant, nostalgic Christmas fragrance to your home.
All you need are firm oranges (or clementines) and whole cloves. Use a toothpick to poke small pilot holes into the orange, then press a clove into each hole, creating patterns, stripes or even completely covering the fruit for a stronger scent. As the orange dries, it slowly releases warm, spicy notes and becomes even more fragrant. When kept in a cool, dry spot with good air circulation they last for several days but do keep an eye on them as eventually they will go bad!
Make Christmas Potpourri
Mix dried citrus, cinnamon sticks, rosemary, cloves, star anise, dried cranberries and vanilla pods. Place in bowls or sachets for gentle, natural Christmas fragrance throughout your home.
Choose a Real Christmas Tree
A natural fir scent instantly transforms a space into a festive home. If you enjoy real trees, they are one of the simplest ways to add a fresh, woody aroma: check locally for places that have sustainable practices and, if you can, choose those cut to survive the seasons and can be replanted.
Light a Real Fire in the fireplace
If you have a fireplace, a small fire brings warmth and that unmistakable wintery, woody smell. Make sure you have it properly cleaned, swept and check for safety before the first use of the season.
