The best family friendly areas and family hotels in Venice Italy

Where should a family stay in Venice Italy? Find out in this carefully crafted roundup of the best family hotels in Venice and the most family-friendly areas to stay in Venice with familyUpdated 2020

One of the most common questions asked by families planning a trip to Venice is: what is the best neighborhood to stay in Venice to be close to the main attractions but be away from the maddening crowds (and crazy price tags)?

Indeed, finding the best place to stay in Venice is not easy.

The city offers a staggering number of accommodation options and it is easy to get overwhelmed.

In this guide, we try to answer your questions about where to stay in Venice with kids and we share our selection of the best family hotels in Venice proper.

Where should a family stay in Venice? Neighborhood guide

Venice city is organized in 6 areas called ‘Sestieri‘: Cannaregio,  Santa Croce, San Polo, San Marco, Castello and Dorsoduro.

They develop along the Canal Grande, which forms and S shape across the city, and while they have ancient origins, they are still nowadays used when referring to addresses and localities within the city.

I usually look at Venice as is the city was made of two fish eating each other (I know it sounds weird, I promise it makes sense if you look at the map!).

The bigger fish is the one with sestiere Cannaregio (the fish head), San Marco (the fish lower jaw) and Castello (the fish tale).

The smaller fish has Santa Croce and San Polo, adjacent to each other forming the head of the fish, and Dorsoduro, its lower jaw.

Each sestiere has its advantages but if you are visiting Venice as a family or anyway want to stay in a quiet area with good facilities and residential feel, some are better than others.

In this guide, I give an overview on what to expect in each of these neighborhoods, favorite family hotels, and our pick for the best area to stay in Venice as a family.

Best family hotels in Venice Cannaregio

Cannaregio is the Northernmost area of Venice.

It is just beside the main Venice Station, Venezia Santa Lucia  and is a large, beautiful area popular with both tourists and locals.

A gorgeous and quiet canal in Cannaregio, Venice, one of our favorite areas to stay in Venice with kids

The very first impression you get from it, when your first arrive by train, doesn’t do the place any justice.

The main road crossing Cannaregio is packed with people, restaurants and shops and you will be forgiven for thinking this was all there is to it.

However, all it takes is to leave the main Cannaregio drag to discover one the most charming and still authentic areas of Venice.

Cannaregio is my area of choice when visiting Venice and I do consider it excellent for families because it is beautiful, quiet but still very well served.

For me, Cannregio is the best area to stay in Venice for:

  • Proximity to the train station
  • Atmosphere
  • Availability of restaurants and hotels

The best family hotels in Venice Cannaregio are:

Accommodation in San Marco is tempting due to its position but comes with drawbacks, the most notable of all being budget.

Finding good and affordable accommodation in this area is possible but does require a bit of scouting and advance booking!

Best family hotels in Venice Castello

Castello is a large sestiere in the Eastern part of Venice. It is a large area and it is pretty varied, with some of the streets very much part of the glamorous Venice of the tourists and other much more secluded and quiet.

This area, especially the most Eastern part, is farther away from the station and is therefore less frequented by tourists that find it less convenient especially for short stays.

It retains, however, a lovely family-friendly feeling and has some excellent addresses.
