How to choose the best Caribbean island for your family vacation

When looking for the ideal Caribbean island family escapes, I recommend looking at the following.

Time of the year – the Caribbean is a large area, subject to different weather patterns.

The central part of the Gulf of Mexico goes through hurricane season in summer and early fall and it is best suited to a winter sun family vacation.

More southern islands such as Aruba and Curacao are outside the hurricane belt and you can visit in summer too.

Checking the safety of the weather for the season of your Caribbean family vacation is a must (not all are great during standard school holidays, see below)

Child-friendly beaches – it is easy to imagine Caribbean islands all with shallow, calm waters; however, not all beaches are family-friendly.

Offshore currents are common so checking water conditions and picking kid-friendly beaches is a must.

Availability of things to do – Caribbean islands come in all shapes and sizes.

Some specialize in all inclusive resorts and offer many organized activities, others are more natural and offer a wider variety of activities which may include sightseeing and cultural and natural discoveries.

Make sure you pick an island that matched the type of family vacation you are dreaming of!

Style of family vacation – connected to the above, you can choose between many different types of holidays in the Caribbean.

Some islands are suited to a stantial, resort style vacation while others are great for driving excursions/day trips and mixing beach time with cultural discoveries.

Whatever vacation style you are into, chances are there is a Caribbean island for you!

Documents needed – some Caribbean islands are independent states; others are US territories, British territories or part of the EU.

Always check what documents you need to visit, bearing in mind that this will depend on your country of origin.

Cuba

We first visited Cuba as a couple and we simply adored the island.

beach in Trinidad Cuba

Cuba is simply magical and perfect for a winter sun escape: it has stunning beaches, lovely people, we felt safe, and Havana is stunning, one of the most interesting and beautiful cities we have ever visited!

There is a huge choice of accommodation and you can opt for all inclusive, hotel or a more local type of experience in a casa particular (aka homestay or B&B)

If you want to relax in a beautiful resort, Cuba has many of them, opening up onto stunning white sandy soft beaches gently sloping into the bluest sea waters.

If you prefer adventuring a little, which I highly recommend in Cuba, you can get on a bus or rent a car and discover many beautiful towns, pretty coves and tap into Cuban history.

We fell in love with Havana, which we could not get enough of (and the cars are super for kids who love transport), and highly recommend a trip at least to Trinidad, which has a totally different flavor and is easy to enjoy at any age.

I also highly recommend visiting the museums in Havana and try to get a sense for the history of this island, which is incredible for kids (and adults too, even if we already have some grasp of it!).

This is a fantastic family holiday spot if you have kids who enjoy cultural, adventurous trips more than theme parks or highly organized activities but perfect for any age, thanks to the welcoming nature of the Cubans and the stunning tropical landscape.
