Dubai is in the Arabian Peninsula on the southern shores of the Persian Gulf.
Located in the Middle East, Dubai is in Asia and it is part of the United Arab Emirates, a federation of 7 Emirates with land borders to Saudi Arabia and Oman.
Dubai is both a city and an Emirate (not a country!). Dubai city is the main metropolitan area in the Dubai Emirates and the most populous city in the UAE.
In 2020, Dubai had a population of 3.38 Million people according to Government sources, concentrated in an area of over 4,000 SqKm/

The Dubai time zone is GMT+4 and it called GST= Gulf Standard Time
When was Dubai founded
Dubai was founded on the 9th June 1833. In origin, Dubai was a village, vestiges of which you can still guess in Old Dubai.
However, it went through tremendous growth fuelled by the presence of petrol in its soil and it is now one of the most modern and flashiest cities in the world.

However, there are very many ex-pats in Dubai and English is the dominant language in Dubai, followed by other ex-pat languages, especially Hindi, Urdu and Tagalog and other languages spoken by the many immigrants from India and South East Asia in particular.

People come to Dubai from Asia, especially India, Bangladesh and Pakistan and there is also a large number of Europeans, especially from the UK.

The tallest building in the world is the Burj Khalifa, which is unique in the world
The Burj Khalifa breaks 6 world records. It is:
- the tallest building in the world, reaching a height of 828 mt/2,716.5 feet, which means it is 3 times as high as the Eiffel Tower!
- the tallest free-standing structure in the world.
- the tower with the highest number of stories in the world – it has 160!
- It has the highest outdoor observation deck in the world
- It has the tallest service elevator in the world
- Its elevator is the longest in the world
as you may expect from such an impressive building, its levitator is also one of the fastest in the world and it leads you to the observation deck at the 124th floor in less than one minute!
Dubai has the first 7 star hotel in the world
Dubai is home to the first ultra luxury 7 sth hotel in the world, the Burj Al Arab.
Te Burj Al Arab was built in 1999 and has the shape of a sail blown by the wind. The hotel is immediately off shore and it is on a man-made island connected to the mainland by a bridge.
The hotel was names a ‘7 star hotel’ due to the incredible luxury of its interiors.
To give you an idea of how unique the hotel is, it is fun to know that you can choose between 17 types of pillows, you can get flowers from 16 different hotel florists, you will walk in interiors covered by over 1,000 sqm of 24-karat gold and you will walk under the largest Swarowski crystal ceiling in the world!
Dubai has an artificial island in the shape of a Palm
One of the most distinctive traits of the Dubai landscape as seen from the air is a peculiar island right off the main Dubai shores shaped as a palm.
This island is man made and it is called, appropriately, ‘The Palm’ and has a main backbone and several curved areas that form the leaves.
Here you find many hotels and resorts including the famous Atlantis Dubai, one of the most recognizable landmarks in Dubai and the home to one of the most expensive suites in the world. The Royal Bridge Suite is said to set you back over 20K Pounds / 27K Dollars!
Polices cars in Dubai are supercars – great Dubai fact for kids!
This is the first thing my car-obsessed son notices about Dubai: the luxury cars and in particular the police cars because, wait for it: police in Dubai uses supercars, including Ferraris and Lamborghinis!
Of course, the Dubai police also has some of the fastest police cars in the world such as the Bugatti Veyron and the Bentley Bentayga.
Dubai is one of the best places in the world if you love gold
Dubai has a real love affair with gold. You can admire gold creations in the Gold Souk, in the already mentioned Burj Al Arab, you can get gold bars for bank machines and you can even order a gold cappuccino.

Dubai loves falcons
Falconry is a huge tradition in Dubai and in the UAE in general.
Falcons have been trained by Bedouin people for countries and they are so important, traditional and beloved in Dubai, it is said the UAE spends over 20 Million each year to protect their population.
